A fourth deadline in resolving the online gambling dispute between the US and Antigua has come and gone with little to show for it. While representatives of both sides cautiously claim progress is being made, a new October 1 deadline has been set for a settlement over the status of the US’ implementation of its UIGEA legislation.
Antigua has successfully challenged UIGEA, a US law that bans non-US gambling companies from operating in the US online gaming market, as contrary to the US’ World Trade Organization obligations for free trade. Antigua relies on gambling for a substantial portion of its national GDP. An agreement by the two would be an indication as to where US online gaming policy may be heading with online gaming optimists hoping for a softening in the US’ stance.
Online casinos such as Windows Casino have responded to the implementation of UIGEA by successfully developing other world markets, including Europe and the potentially lucrative Asian market. The bounce-back from the huge losses incurred by the industry due to UIGEA has seen a renaissance of the popular online casino’s fortune with its future looking stronger with each new year.
